Who are you and what do you do?

I am Jarrod Kimber and I write and talk about cricket.

Are you working in the industry you thought you would be working in growing up?

No, but to be honest, I am not sure what that was going to be. I thought I would be a writer, but I did not think professionally and I hoped it would be a screenwriter, but I got lost along the way.

How did you get into Online Media?

I was a film maker who was not doing very well and I had a lot of free time. I started a blog and thanks to the Australia-India Test in Sydney exploded. That ended with me having the biggest cricket blog and I just followed that until now.

What is a positive habit your profession has given you?

I love to write, I work harder than I ever had. I am not sure if I ever truly worked hard before this. Now, I probably work too much, but it is still overall positive.

What is one negative habit your profession has given you?

I think in journalism there is a natural cynicism and it is obviously a great skill to have but the negativity in that does wear you out and warp you a little.

What are the qualities you need to be successful in your profession?

No idea, I do not have any. I think being a writer is about writing and presenting and broadcasting is the same. Obviously, people get qualifications on these things but I never saw the necessity. I nearly finished one year of film school.

You have a YouTube channel with almost 9 million views, what is it about cricket that keeps people hooked?

Cricket is played on a surface that dictates everything. It changes and degrades during the time you watch and this is a sport that helped build nations and languages. It is not just a sport.

You’ve managed to transform something you enjoy into your profession, aside from your love of cricket, what is one thing that motivates you to do what you do as a profession?

I love writing. I did it every day before it was a profession and still do it even when I am not paid. I am a writer, all I do is write.

What is an obstacle you’ve faced that nobody had prepared you for?

I was not prepared for anything. My entire career was by accident and I made it in a style that did not exist before, so there was no template to follow. So I did lots of things right and wrong. I probably made obstacles by the odd choices I made but I backed myself and worked hard hoping that would work.

Who is your dream creator/cricketer to work with?

I think R Ashwin is a really interesting person going ahead in cricket media and so I would love to work with him. If he attacks his media career the same way as his cricket, he could be the most important voices in cricket. Outside of cricket, I have been lucky enough to work with Pablo Torre on one occasion, so I would happily do that again. I grew up reading US sports writers and I’ve loved working in the US with how they do editorials.

But mostly, I would like to own a company in cricket media. I briefly ran a podcast company and was lucky enough to hire some of the best people around the sport. But sadly, we ran out of funding. That is still the dream though, I have always thought cricket media could be better and that too much talent is badly used. Hopefully, one day I can fix both issues.
